“The love-energy derived from sexual sublimation can and does expand beyond love of one individual. It extends in concentric circles or spheres, encompassing ever larger groups of human beings. In the form of compassion it is poured upon those who suffer; then it undergoes a further transmutation and becomes a motive power for social and philanthropic action. … It can reach out further until it radiates as brotherly love upon all human beings and upon all living creatures.” Roberto Assagioli (Psychosynthesis, 1965, Chapter VIII p273)
We invite you to reflect on sexuality with new eyes from a bio-psychosynthesis viewpoint, and to submit an article about the insights you receive.
For thousands of years human sexuality has been characterised by male domination and the enslavement of women as chattels of fathers and husbands. In many parts of the world and in the minds of many men an attitude of male entitlement still prevails. Despite this, in recent years we have seen growing respect: for women’s human and sexual rights, freedom, and autonomy; for people whose sexual identity is non-binary.
As psychosynthesis coaches/counsellors/psychotherapists we are working all the time with clients who are struggling with sexual and relational issues. We don’t seek to change the world by some grand intervention, but by supporting change from the bottom up, helping our clients to better their sexual and relational lives. This means, the onus is upon us to deepen and broaden our own understanding of sexuality and sexual issues—and to accept a shift in our own preconceptions—if we are to further our work. The theme of Psychosynthesis and Sexuality is an invitation to do this collectively by sharing our reflections and insights.
As a consummate exemplar of reflection and insight, Assagioli sees sexuality radiating out as love-energy to embrace the world. Breathtaking! Assagioli believed in the continuing advancement of Psychosynthesis thought, so this is our invitation: Be bold. Be brave. Be radical.
Here are some areas of reflection:
- gender identity and the call of Self; our sexual subpersonalities;
- the synthesis of sexual opposites;
- I-Thou relations between human beings (Martin Buber, 1937);
- the balance of sex and power;
- love, sex and Will; reflections on Psychosynthesis, 1965, Chapter VIII;
- applying the principles and techniques of psychosynthesis (The Act of Will, 1973, pp100-105) to sexuality.
Or, wherever your reflections take you.
